"Self-esteem is different than conceit. Conceit is the weirdest disease in the world. It makes everyone sick except the one who has it."
And
"Self-conceit may lead to self-destruction.".
B. Write a short 50-70 word reflection for each quotation that answers the following two questions: What does each quotation mean? How do they reveal or explain two sides of your theme concept?
The first quotation of " Self esteem being different than conceit " is written exactly as it's suppose to be taken as. It means how Conceit is different than self-esteem and is the weirdest thing on the world. Everyone is sick of conceit and those who have it, are blind to it. It says how Conceit is sickening, and is bad for people.
- The Interview With The Vampire: This novel is the first book of the Vampire Chronicles. This book is about this vampire named Louis who is being interviewed by this man named Daniel. He tells him his life story and reveals his maker "Lestat". Lestat is a perfect example of someone who is conceited. He is a flirtaious, curious, romantic and conceited vampire. He is very proud of himself, and can be seen as cocky for it though.
- Winter Girls: This novel has an opposite example of Conceit. Lia is an anorexic girl who has been going through a rough time since her best friend Cassie died. She has been struggling with her weight and her life. She isn't proud of herself nor is she conceit.
- The Perfect Cut: This book is about a boy who is suverelly depressed and cuts himself because he sister died. He attends counselling and dosen't listen to anything she says. He is conceited with his problems and believes the way he is dealing with things are right.
The second quote "Self-conceit may lead to self-destruction." talks about how those with self-conceit are so stuck up, blind to it. Acting in the way they do with their conceitedness, they could be lead into self-destruction.
- Cirque Du Freak : This book is about a boy named Darren Shan. He is a normal teenaged boy, and in attempt to save his friend from a deadly spider bite, he agrees to be turned into a vampire assistant by this strange man named Mr.Crepsley. Darren started out at first as a calm boy, yet he was conceited. When he saw the spider that Mr.Crepsley owned, he was conceited with the spider and that led him into danger. Which got him into the whole mess.
- Candy : Joe is an average teenager who is taking a train to his doctor's appointment in the town close by. When he meets this girl Candy at the station, he finds out that she dosen`t even control her life and is always being dragged around by this guy named Iggy. Intrigued with Candy, and infatuated with her, he desperately tries to help her no matter what. I believe Candy shows a good example of `Conceitednes `. She is proud of herself, yet she is being controled by these bad men and finds herself heading for self destruction. Her life shall be ruined if she lets her life continue on like this.
- Just Lather, That`s all : Though there are no obvious examples in this story. I believe the Barber is a bit Conceited. He is very proud of himself and his work, yet because of it. Perhaps, if he did kill Torres when he could`ve, he could have been heading for self-destruction.
Both of these quotes show two sides. How Sickening Conceitness can be, and how it can lead to self-destruction.
This is a great start. Who said the quotations you selected? Later you are going to be required to investigate the source (the voice) of the ideas - so you will need to have authors to investigate.
ReplyDeleteHow might one keep self esteem as esteem without moving towards conceit?
You have two interesting sides with some good supports so far.
