Flash Fiction

The quotes I have used are :

"Self-esteem is different than conceit. Conceit is the weirdest disease in the world. It makes everyone sick except the one who has it." - Hartman Rector Jr.
"Self-conceit may lead to self-destruction" - The Frog and the Ox.

FINAL DRAFT

"How dare you?" she barked. Storming up the stairs to our apartment. I followed, panting from the lack of exercise. "What have I done this time?" I asked. I was blunt to my mistakes. The tone I was taking with my wife, Emily, was wrong. I was trying to annoy her. As all couples do when they get in an argument. She shoved the room keys into the lock. Twisting and turning, she pulled them out, pushed the door open and hurried inside. She then kicked off her black boots. I followed in after her, hobbling on one foot after the other as I yanked both shoes off. "You have no idea what you did wrong?" she asked. I turned to look at her. "No. I thought tonight went swell." I replied, crossing my arms. She whipped around. Anger engulfed her. "Jacob! You are so clueless!" she wept. "This evening, you insulted my mother, and you are all together self conceited..." she looked to the floor and placed her hand on her forehead. Am I honestly blind to my actions? I found myself frowning. "I never insulted your mother... Directly. Come on Emily..." I pleaded. Emily looked up, "Everyone is sick of your attitude.". I found myself stepping backwards, grunting. " As if." I didn't see anything wrong with me. I am a proud and forward man. Emily moved along the hallway and stopped by me and looked into my eyes. "I'm done with this argument... Just remember one thing Jacob." she said through her quiet sobs. I looked down at her, and frowned. "You will lead to your own self destruction. Perhaps the loss of your life, or people close to you." she said sternly. I was surprised with how strong she was with saying this. I blinked a few times, my mouth gaped open a bit in confusion. Pulling forward, she disappeared into the dark bedroom. Leaving me in the dark hall way to swallow up what she had said.

PERSONAL REFLECTION

As I read over my short flash fiction story, I find that I am quite proud of it and I believe I have gotten the message through of what was going on. The significance of this piece is how it starts off in the middle of an action and how well it relates to the theme of Conceit. In this story, a couple is returning from an evening out in which included visiting Emily's mother. You can tell straight away that Emily is upset and Jacob is clueless to what he has done. In the one quote by Hartman Rector Jr, it explains how everyone is sick of people who are conceit, except for the ones who have it. I took this quote and interpreted it as someone who is blind to the feelings of others, someone who is very proud of themselves and are very forward. Because of Jacob's conceitedness, he bluntly insulted Emily's mother, in which upset her quite much. Close to the ending of the story, Emily states that she is done with the argument and that if he keeps up like the way he is, he will lead to his own self destruction. Relating to the quote by The frog and the Ox. This story shows plenty of areas in which Jacob is conceited and what it could do to him.
